Most problem solving is deficit focused, essentially asking the question, “What is wrong?” Appreciative Inquiry and similar strengths-based approaches are positively biased asking the question, “What is right?” Thinking paradoxically, we can see that these are two sides of a unity – What Is. The exclusion of either side of this coin limits the understanding of both the other side and the unity represented.
In Paradoxical Inquiry® practice the process leads to what we want in a fashion that is affirming and encouraging while practical and relevant. It is not accusatory or judgmental. It results in a shared understanding of What Is and agreement on What We Want. It strengthens teams and transforms organizations through the synergy of thinking together, positive conflict, and shared reality.
